Professor Newton da Costa
Professor Newton da Costa
  • Event description:

Professor Newton da Costa (September 16, 1929 – April 16, 2024) was a Brazilian logician, mathematician, and philosopher. He is widely regarded as a founder of paraconsistency and its applications to various fields, including philosophy, computing, and artificial intelligence. This two-day international workshop (in hybrid mode) has a dual purpose. It intends to commemorate the life and work of Prof. da Costa through discussions and talks by speakers from India and abroad on the topic of paraconsistency. On the other hand, it aims to assemble people interested in paraconsistency in India for exchanging ideas and building connections. It may be recalled that the 5th World Congress on Paraconsistency was held at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India, in February 2014. Since then, research in this field has grown considerably in this country. The present workshop will help launch a school of paraconsistency in India following the footsteps of Prof. da Costa.
